Spotify Launches Major Piracy Crackdown

Spotify has warned that users caught accessing the music streaming service with 'hacked' apps may be banned permanently from the site.

Some of Spotify's 159 million users have installed special software to illegally access premium features, such as the removal of adverts between tracks, without paying for the service.

Now the firm has issued warnings regarding this 'abnormal activity' and says that future breaches could result in a suspension or termination of a user's account. It is not known how many Spotify account holders are using the hacked software to access the premium content for free.

The email sent out to affected users, reads:

"We detected abnormal activity on the app you are using so we have disabled it. Don't worry – your Spotify account is safe.

"To access your Spotify account, simply uninstall any unauthorized or modified version of Spotify and download and install the Spotify app from the official Google Play Store. If you need more help, please see our support article on Reinstalling Spotify.

"If we detect repeated use of unauthorized apps in violation of our terms, we reserve all rights, including suspending or terminating your account."
