Landmark Ormskirk Pub to Become Supermarket

Plans to turn a landmark Ormskirk pub into a Co-op supermarket are expected to be approved by West Lancashire Borough Council tomorrow, January 12.

The proposal will see the Ropers Arms pub on Wigan Road transformed into a brand new convenience store.

The existing building is currently closed and has been falling into a state of disrepair for some time. Under the plans, the existing structure will be completely demolished, and a new one-storey shop constructed in its place.

In the Design and Access statement submitted with the application, the developer said:

"The landscaped area will give this location a vibrant public interface creating a true sense of 'place' where currently there is nothing but overgrown planting and vacant public house, which the local population get no benefit from.

"The site is easily accessible by foot, bike, bus, train and car. The architecture respects the local surroundings whilst also reflecting the facilities provided."

The Ropers Arms dates from the early-mid 19^th century and in planning terms is considered to be an 'undesignated heritage asset.' As such, a Heritage Assessment has been undertaken and submitted in support of the planning application.

The report concludes that the Ropers Arms is of low significance and its loss cannot be considered adverse, especially given the poor state of the existing structure.
