Doctors missed Cervical Cancer nine times

When doctors refused to give 20 year old Keely Devine a smear test, the young mum died just three years later of Cervical Cancer as medical staff missed the signs nine times.

Keely first visited her GP after the birth of her son in 2010 complaining of pain in her hip and abdomen together with heavy bleeding but was told she was 'too young'.

Following the delivery of her son, Jayden, Keely made a further six visits to her doctor and three trips to hospital over a period of two and a half years before she was finally diagnosed.

Her family who are now suing the NHS for medical negligence since Keely's death in September 2013 are still trying to come to terms with losing the Yorkshire mum, who had so much to live for.

Mother Alexandra Dickinson, is now taking care of her grandson and told Mail Online reporters, "It was heartbreaking to see her struggling with her illness as it took hold in the last few months of her life.  She was incredibly frightened and in a great amount of pain".

As NHS smear tests are currently offered to women between the ages of 25 and 64 years old, guidelines suggest that Cervical Cancer is 'very rare' in women under 25.

By the time Keely was diagnosed, the Cancer had spread to her pelvis and the large tumour was obstructing her cervix.

Tragically, she spent the last four months of her life on the Teenage Cancer Ward of St. James's Hospital, Leeds.
