Child injured by exploding football

When mum of three, Nikki Thomas bought two of her young boys a football each from a high street store.  She was horrified when one of them exploded in the car on the way home, injuring her son.

Nikki and her partner Tom Winn, bought two footballs for £6 from the Sports Direct Store in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire for 3 year old Codey and his 4 year old brother Tod.

The couple had asked a member of staff at the well-known sports shop to inflate the balls for their children and were shocked when one of them literally blew apart in the back of the car, injuring Codey's leg.

The 28 year old mum said in the Mail Online, "When we had paid and got into the car and as we were driving into a supermarket car park to pull up, we heard a huge bang".

Telling reporters that when she jumped out of the car, the worried mum discovered Codey's football had split in half while it was on his knee.

"He was in tears and he had bruises and burns on his leg.  It's so lucky that it wasn't his face.  I then took the football off Tod because it looked like it was splitting at the seams as well".

When Nikki and Tom returned to the store, they were refunded for the footballs and offered an apology.  It was also explained that staff are supposed to undertake training before they can inflate balls.

Sport's Direct are currently investigating the incident.
