Teenager dies following PE lesson

A 14-year-old boy has died after making a sliding tackle during a football game in a PE lesson.

Sugenth Jeyakumar was playing with classmates on the astroturf pitch at Whitmore High School in Harrow, north west London.

The student, who was in Year 10 at the school, was rushed to Northwick Park Hospital following the incident, but he died from his injuries soon after.

It is believed he suffered a severe knock to the chest which caused internal bleeding, and which then led to his death. An inquest is due to take place next year.

Tributes have poured in for the teenager, with classmates, teachers and friends describing him as "a great lad," and "an amazing friend, caring brother and loving son."

Sue Hammond, head teacher of the school said "This young man represented the best in all of us: caring and helpful, bright and hardworking, liked by everyone and with a great future ahead of him."

Leader of Harrow Council, David Perry, said "Our thoughts and condolences are with the family following this tragic accident. Harrow Council are doing all we can to support the school community at this difficult time."
