Rogue private investigators used HMRC to gather information

Since the original report was issued in 2008, further details have been unearthed regards rogue private investigators targeting HMRC (Her Majestys Revenue & Customs) for individuals personal information.

Basic details were obtained such as income and tax paid by the individuals. The report shows that the private investigators also targeted BT and British Gas customers.

It's estimated that over 200 people and companies are involved and have illegally gathered information.

Some of the names passed to the Home Affairs Select Committee and Scotland Yard were those of former police officers, public service employees, bank workers and a HM Prison Service employee.

Since the report, Theresa May has announced that individuals will need to obtain a licence by the Security Industry Association before they gather information. Those found without a licence will face fines and even a jail sentence.
