Southern Rail Going to Court over Strike Action

The RMT union has revealed that Southern Rail is taking legal action to try to stop a series of strikes starting from tomorrow, October 11.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union planned strike action from tomorrow in the ongoing dispute regarding the role of conductors.

This morning, the union confirmed it had received notice of a legal challenge, just hours ahead of a planned three-day walk out.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash, said:

can confirm the receipt of a formal legal challenge from Southern Rail in the guards safety dispute.

"It is appalling that rather than sitting down with us at Acas today to seek a resolution the company have chosen to run to the courts under the cloak of the anti-union laws.

"The union intends to continue with the planned action and is examining the details of the paperwork. We will issue a further statement in due course."

Southern passengers have endured severe disruption since April when the RMT orchestrated the first of a series of strikes over changes to the role of guards.

Union bosses claim Southern's plans to strip responsibility for operating the train doors and giving the task to drivers threatens jobs as well as putting the safety of passengers at risk.
