Rise in Zero hours contracts

A rise in 'zero hour' contracts has been making headlines in recent months.

Figures showed that 200,000 workers were taking on casual contracts in 2012, an increase of 174% since 2005.

Such contracts have no guaranteed hours and workers will only be paid for the hours they work. Many Brits are taking to the contracts as they offer flexibility and are an easier alternative to unemployment.

Others are claiming that the contracts take advantage of those who are desperate to accept any role to keep them in work.

Andy Burnham, from the Labour party, has recently called for zero hour contracts to be banned entirely.

Despite the controversy, zero hour contracts have become increasingly popular especially in today's climate. In some circumstances, the contract will help those out of work or with little experience to learn new skills until they find permanent full time employment.

We would advise those looking into work under such an agreement to be cautious and be aware of the implications, e.g hours, holiday and pay.
