Romanians camping in London's exclusive Park Lane

With the average house price in central London around £3million, there is growing concern about the number of Romanian travellers who are sleeping rough in the exclusive Park Lane area.

As the homeless Romanians are reported to be spending their days drinking on park benches and rifling through litter bins, their nights are spent bedding down in high-end shop doorways.

Since January when the European Union restrictions on movement were lifted, figures have revealed that the number of Romanians on the Capital's streets has trebled.

Complaints are coming in thick and fast from residents and shopkeepers alike about Eastern European gangs allegedly washing in fountains, dumping rubbish and urinating in public.

High level talks have been held in Westminster with Home Office Officials about the problem with a crackdown planned from the UK Border Agency.

New legislation means that the Border Agency officials can deport EU nationals who are sleeping rough if they are unable to prove they have a job or good reason to be here – they can also be refused re-entry for 12 months.

A sight-seeing tour agent based in Marble Arch, Aaron Devaney, spoke to reporters about the Romanians, saying, "They rob, steal, they make a mockery of this country and then the police come and give them free flights home".

He went on to comment, "I know what they're up to because I see them every day.  They sleep around the edges of the grass and shower in the fountains".
