Action over Asbestos in Manchester schools

With over 70% of schools in Britain containing asbestos, the Government confirmed last month that a review will be made to tackle the issue.

The independent advisory committee will be issuing the results to see whether staff and children are affected by asbestos. A review of their policies on asbestos will be made to tackle the most affected areas across Manchester.

Statistics showed that more than 128 teachers died from asbestos related diseases during 2002 and 2010. An investigation is being made as to whether the deaths were associated with asbestos exposure.

David Ashton who is the HSE's director of field operations, explained: "Where death certificates show 'mesothelioma – teacher'…someone who has been exposed over 40 or 50 years of their life is not sufficient information to conclude that they died because they taught in schools where there was asbestos."

With most schools found to be at "low risk", an inspection will provide a good idea of the risks to staff and students across schools in Britain, Mr Ashton suggested.
