Bizarre Injuries in HSCIC Hospital Admission Report

New figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) has revealed a list of the most bizarre hospital admissions across England last year.


Included in the figures were three admissions for patients attacked by crocodiles (or alligators), seventy-five admissions for patients bitten or crushed by other reptiles and, incredibly, 16 lightning strikes.


Bizarre hospital admissions included:


6,836 dog bites
3,813 spider bites
1,173 snow/ice falls
1,170 hornet/wasp stings
338 sharp/spiky plant injuries
112 human stampede injuries
74 snake/lizard attacks
37 rat bites
16 lightening strikes
17 marine animal injuries
11 pesticide injuries
3 crocodile/alligator attacks
2 scorpion injuries


The largest number of admissions by age group were patients between the ages of 65 and 69, a group which also saw a year on year increase of 1.2 million to 1.3 million.


The most common cause for injury was falling, resulting in 421,800 patient admissions last year, with patients over 65 accounting for 63.2% of the total figure.
