Legal Highs seized by South Yorkshire Police

The so called "legal highs" have been targeted by South Yorkshire Police in a joint operation with their Trading Standards colleagues from Sheffield City Council.

As such an amount of New Psychoactive Substances (also known as NPS) have been seized from shops across Sheffield. Operation "Icarus" has been part of an ongoing campaign to safeguard NPS users in the wider Sheffield area.

With the misleading description of "legal highs" that fact that such products have not been tested for use on humans makes them illegal, courtesy of consumer safety legislation.

Additionally certain products are suspected of containing banned substances which bring them under the realm of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The head of Sheffield Councils Environmental Regulation Team, Ian Ashmore, said, ""New Psychoactive Substances are labelled as 'not for human consumption' but they are designed to mimic the effects of controlled drugs. We have evidence that people are buying these products to get high, and their effect on users can be unpredictable and extremely dangerous."
