Drink Driver's Ex Tipped off Police

A drunk-driver crashed into a car and then tried to claim that somebody else was behind the wheel, a court has heard.

Johan Blackham dialled 999 to say that he had been "drinking and at his sister's house, and that the car he had parked outside had gone missing.

However, police had received reports earlier in the evening about a drunk driver being involved in a road accident in Derby. They also received a phone call from Blackham's ex-partner to say that he had been drinking and driving.

Officers arrested Blackham at his home at about 1am the following morning, where he became aggressive and started swearing at the police. He later admitted the offences.

The 35-year-old pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice, driving without due care and attention, and failing to provide a breath sample.

At Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court, Recorder Peter Levins said:

"I think you know how many people you have let down and have become truly ashamed. What you did was stupid, rather than malicious."

Blackham was banned from driving for three years, was fined a total of £300, had points added to his driving licence, and has been ordered to attend six months of alcohol treatment.
