PTA Treasurer Stole Funds from Playground Fund

The treasurer of a Parent-Teacher Association at a Derby school stole £2,000 that was earmarked to make much-needed playground improvements for pupils.

Sarah Lloyd took the profits from fundraising events such as school discos because she was experiencing financial difficulties. The 40-year-old also wrote out cheques for cash that went missing from the Silverhill Parents, Teachers and Friends Association account.

The school became suspicious and ordered an investigation which saw the finger of blame pointed at Mrs Lloyd. The school wanted her to pay back the money without involving the police, but Lloyd denied she was responsible and the authorities were called.

Now Lloyd has been handed a six-month jail term, suspended for 18 months.

Sentencing her at Derby Crown Court, Judge Jonathan Bennett, said:

"You were the treasurer and your theft has had untold consequences. It involved a breach of trust and carried on for a long time. This money was for the children and it was going to be used to improve the playground facilities at the school.

"It was going to improve the lives of your children and the other children at the school and this was money that was taken from fundraising activities and you stole it to alleviate the financial pressures you and your partner had."
