Terrorists face upto 39 years jail time

Following on from the London Bridge and Streatham terror attacks terrorists are now facing upto 39 years in prison.

Government Ministers are preparing a bill which mandates that a minimum sentence of 14 years be introduced in instances where a terrorist incident would lead to multiple deaths.

Additionally the judiciary will be given powers to impose an extended licence period of up to 25 years. During this period offenders can be recalled to jail for any breach.

Such licence conditions range from;

  • Restrictions on where the individual lives
  • The electronic devices they use
  • Bans on where they can travel
  • And who they meet and contact.

Furthermore Ministers are suggesting freed terrorists should be subject to Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures (TPIMs). These entail the terrorist being monitored round the clock with tight restrictions on contacts and movements.

At present only five UK terrorists are currently held on TPIMs. That is partially a funding issue as the process can cost up to £200,000 per person due to the manpower considerations.

Tighter restrictions have been introduced due to the decision to scrap automatic early release for all terrorist offenders. Two such individuals, Usman Khan and Sudesh Amman, subsequently mounted attacks at London Bridge and Streatham before being shot dead by police.

As such the majority of convicted terrorists will now serve the full prison terms ordered by the judge. This includes those on extended determinate sentences who were jailed for life.

The maximum sentences for other terror offences including membership of a banned organisation will also be increased from 10 to 14 years. All freed terrorists will be required to spend at least a year on licence.

Convicted terrorists can now face lie detector tests.
