Teacher jailed for grooming pupil

A teacher of religious education was jailed for eight years at Manchester Crown Court this week after he was found guilty of sexual grooming one of his pupils.

The Court heard that 57 year old Richard Jones had been meeting a teenage pupil at a South Manchester school secretly, kissing and groping her.

As the allegations emerged, another former pupil came forward saying that Jones had also abused her as a child in the 1970's.

Colleagues of Jones had voiced their concerns about his behaviour towards the pupil, saying that it was 'inappropriate'.

It was said in a Daily Mail report that Jones had 'ignored the 'shot across the bows' when the allegations were reported to the authorities and he was suspended pending an inquiry.

The abuse continued and when the child's parents became suspicious, they found explicit email conversations and graphic images exchanged between Jones and the girl, he was reported to police.

As Jones was sentenced to six years for the recent sexual abuse case, he also received a further two year custodial sentence for the historic abuse of a 13 year old girl in Liverpool.

Judge Robert Atherton commented as he delivered sentencing, "She was clearly a vulnerable girl, she came to you for support – but you betrayed her".

He went on to say, "While it is clear that she did not protest against your sexual activities with her, it is also clear that you must have been grooming her in all those days and weeks over which all this occurred".
