Cheshire East Council Plans to Sell Off Surplus Assets

Cheshire East Council is planning to sell off surplus assets in an effort to raise funds for reinvestment in its frontline services.

The Council, which has adopted a system of 'working without walls' across a number of its services, is considering whether or not to continue to own some of its buildings. By selling assets that are surplus to requirement, the Council aims to raise £25 million in 2015/16.

Michael Jones, Council Leader at Cheshire East Council, said:

"Property is the Council's second largest cost after the staff, so future efficiency savings must use assets as a driver for change.

"We need to identify where services are best delivered, challenging the need for assets and 'working without walls' - where officers use mobile technology and do not have their 'own' desk in a council building. It's about working smarter to deliver for our residents."

The Council currently owns more than 2,350 land and property assets, including offices, libraries and leisure centres, worth a total of over £485 million and costs a staggering £17 million a year to manage.
