Junior Doctors Strike Called Off

Planned strike action at Southport and Ormskirk hospital has been called off by the British Medical Association (BMA).

The five-day industrial action was due to take place between 8am and 5pm from Monday, September 12 until Friday, September 16.

Unlike most previous strikes, no emergency cover was to be provided, and it was thought many planned operations and procedures would have to be rescheduled.

Ellen McCourt, Chair of the British Medical Association's Junior Doctors Committee, has now released a statement saying the walkout has been cancelled. She said:

"Our hospitals are chronically under staffed. Our NHS is desperately underfunded. We have to listen to our colleagues when they tell us that they need more time to keep patients safe.

"We have also listened to the concerns of working doctors, patient groups and the public. Thousands of you have been in touch, your level of anger over the Secretary of State's imposed contract remains high, but at the same time you want to keep your patients safe during industrial action.

"The BMA is therefore suspending the industrial action planned for the week of 12 September."

However, further industrial action scheduled for November and December are still expected to go ahead.
