Patient died after dentist removed 10 teeth

Doctor Tushar Patel has been banned from dental practice for one year after his patient bled to death after he removed ten of her teeth. From his treatment rooms in Purley, Surrey, he treated a woman dealing with advanced gum disease.

The individual, known as Patient A, visited the dental practice in the summer of 2017. .

The dentist removed all her upper teeth, during two appointments within a week of each other, and failed to warn of an increased risk of bleeding because she was taking the drug Warfarin.

Unfortunately hours after her final appointment she was rushed to A&E after collapsing at home with "bleeding from her mouth". She died at King's College Hospital on July 19, 2017.

A coroner determined that the medical cause of death was haemorrhage from the tooth extraction site, warfarin treatment and dental extraction.

The GDC (General Dental Council) carried out a professional conduct hearing and declared that Patel's fitness to practise was "impaired".

The hearing heard that Patel, who had more than 30 years' experience, failed to "weigh up the risks" of his treatment and did not  subsequently dress his patient's wounds properly.

The GDC heard how Mr Patel failed to carry out the appropriate checks designed to assess the chances of post-operative bleeding.
