Lewisham Law Firm - Will Writing

.... the moving finger writes, and having writ moves on, nor all thy piety or wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all they tears wash out a word of it ...

The origin of the expression, "the writing on the wall." Omar Khayyam11th Century AD.

Why does a person need a Will ?

  • If you die without having organised a Will the government dictates how your property, money and possessions are allocated. Not ideal.
  • Unmarried couples, who have yet to register a civil partnership, are unable to inherit from each other. That can cause considerable financial headaches for the remaining partner.
  • If children are involved it makes sense to decide upon will look after them in the event one or both parents die.
  • Additionally it maybe possible to mitigate your Inheritance Tax bill by considering your options as part of the Will writing process.
  • Your circumstances may have changed since a previous Will was written and as such you may need to revise it.
  • You can nominate your funeral arrangements. It's a sad topic but you may wish to be cremated rather than buried.

What should I do with my completed Will ?

Simple answer. Keep it somewhere safe. Somewhere that your "executors" and other family members know where to find it at the appropriate time.

We would advise against safety deposit boxes or anywhere that will need a Court Order to open.

For a small fee we can store your Will and act on your behalf in the unfortunate event of your demise. Simply make family members aware of who we are.
