Firefighters Attacked in Bonfire Night Violence

Firefighters have faced several nights of violence as they fought to keep the public safe during their busiest time of the year.

Emergency teams across Greater Manchester were repeatedly attacked with fireworks, bricks and other objects as they dealt with hundreds of calls on bonfire night.

The region's mayor Andy Burnham witnessed the chaos first hand when a firework was thrown at the team he was accompanying on Sunday evening.

In just four hours on Sunday night, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service received 205 calls, and attended 136 incidents in the region.

Mr Burnham, who shadowed a crew in Bolton, called the stunt 'disgusting.' He said:

"It was a shock to see the fire service being attacked. Unbelievably the firefighters said it was actually very common. This is fundamentally unacceptable.

"Attacking front line 999 responders is disgusting and, where there is evidence, we should throw the book at those responsible.

"Attacking fire crews is certainly not what we're about in Greater Manchester."

Neighbouring crews across the region came under fire from bricks and fireworks for the second night running, with youths hurling glass bottles at a fire engine in Salford on Saturday night.
