Co-Op Legal to Axe 60 PI Jobs

The personal injury department at Co-operative Legal Services (CLS) has told its staff 60 redundancies will be taking place in January.

At an annual business meeting the current staff were told, by their managers, that they planned to halve the workforce in the new year.

The Law Gazette reported that voluntary redundancy won't be an option.

The cuts are partly due to the Co-op losing a "significant introducer" and correspondingly the number of personal injury files are lower than needed to support the existing staff members.

A spokesman for CLS told the Gazette; 'We have announced a restructuring of our personal injury division and formal consultation with staff will begin in the new year.'

CLS reported a £3.4m loss in the first half of 2013, compared with a £700,000 profit for the same period in 2012.

One of the founders of CLS, commercial director Robert Labadie, will also leave at the end of this month after having worked at the firm for over seven years.
