Construction workers win pay out

Workers made redundant when Northern Ireland-based construction firm Mivan went into administration in January, have won a compensation pay out following an industrial tribunal ruling.

Solicitors for the employees argued that staff were entitled to a protective award, as they had not been consulted before being made redundant.

Each worker is expected to receive around £2,500 in compensation as a result of the ruling.

The tribunal granted the protective award for all of the workers who had made a claim. Because Mivan is insolvent, the cost will be covered by the redundancy payments service.

Andy Fisher, regional secretary for the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT) said "Dedicated construction workers, many with years of service with the company, were dismissed without warning."

The ruling paves the way for other former employees at Mivan to also claim compensation. The company was one of Ireland's best known construction companies and employed 289 people, specialising in fitting out cruise ships and high-end property developments.
