Rise in employment tribunal fees

New UK rules have been announced that employees will have pay fees of £160 or £250 if they wish to bring a claim against their employer. The introduction of fees has also been welcomed by some Scottish Lawyers.

If the case goes ahead, employees will have to pay further charges of either £230 or £950 and with cases such as unfair dismissal, fees up to £1200 could be charged just to have their cases heard.

Law firms in Scotland believe that there will be fewer employment tribunals brought against businesses.  

Kim Pattullo, from Scottish law firm, HBJ Gateley has suggested that the new fees will result in a fall of tribunal cases and that "The changes should help ensure that legitimate claims are dealt with effectively and in a timely manner."

Other firms have suggested that the new legislation would help cut out false or frivolous claims and act as a deterrent to employees looking to make a claim.

While employers are welcoming the fee increase, there are protests set to take place outside an employment tribunal in central London.

Andy Prendergast, from the GMB who will be running the protests said, "The charging of £1,200 effectively means that many workers will lose any chance they had to seek redress if they are poorly treated."
