Summer bank holidays could be moved to winter

Government wellbeing officers are considering moving our summer bank holidays to the winter to give people extra time off work before Christmas.

A government think tank concluded that spreading the national holidays across the year would make the country's workforce happier in a report published by the Mail.

There are currently two bank holidays in May which are often shortly after Easter and then one at the end of August, leaving the UK's workers without a break for four months leading up to Christmas.

As the winter months can be a dreary time, Lisa Ollerhead of the Government's wellbeing unit said in a blog on 'Wellbeing and why it matters' that a break would be good for the country. Adding, 'After a few more years of data we might even consider moving a bank holiday into early winter when the nights are drawing in and we're feeling low'.

The government has also taken a close look at who is the happiest in their careers in the report. Surprisingly, highly paid chief executives and senior officials who enjoy a high salary do not all consider take home pay to be the most important factor.

You may not think it but pub landlords top the chart of the most miserable workers in the country closely followed by their bar staff in the league table of job satisfaction.

The league table commissioned by David Cameron will cost £2million per year for the government to collate statistics about our happiness.

Amongst the happiest people in their jobs are churchmen and women, joined by farmers and fitness instructors but for debt collectors, industrial cleaners and security guards, work really is just a means to an end.
