Ed Balls and the Mansion Tax

A far cry from Rochdale, possibly, but Accusations of "scare tactics" have been placed at the doors of Savills Estate Agents by the Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls.

The suggestion is that the stories regarding the proposed Mansion Tax are already affecting the London property market.

According to Savills, "The UK's prime housing market is expected to slow in the run up to next year's election and grow steadily thereafter, but the introduction of a mansion tax would change the outlook dramatically. It would take some time for the markets to accurately price in the impact of a mansion tax, but the threat has already slowed the market".

Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show, Ed Balls defended the policy and with 6 months to go aims to sell the policy to the UK electorate.

The property website Rightmove have research which suggests the most popular housing policies people want to see after the May election are a possible Mansion Tax and reform of Stamp Duty.
