Metrolink Staff Too Scared to Work on Rochdale Line

Metrolink staff are saying they are too scared to work on the Rochdale line after a series of anti-social attacks in recent months.

Staff for Metrolink say they are scared to work on the Rochdale and Oldham line following a spate of vandalism and attacks on the trams, with drivers in particular desperate not to work the route. Recent complaints have included anti-social behaviour, smashed trams and staff being threatened with knives.

Peter Cushing, Transport for Greater Manchester's Metrolink director, said:

"Traditionally there tends to be an increase in youth-related anti-social behaviour during school summer holidays, as shown with a recent spate of incidents on one line, and this is something the Travelsafe Unit will feature into their plans for this period, where they will be carrying increased patrols."

Metrolink bosses say security measures have been stepped up since the complaints due to concerns for the safety of both staff and passengers.
