Woman Dies After Being Hit by Car in Rochdale; Driver Arrested on Suspicion of Murder

A woman who was among four people injured in two separate collisions in Rochdale on Saturday has died, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed.

The woman was airlifted to hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Whitworth Road. Three other pedestrians, including a child, were injured in an earlier incident on Woodgate Avenue, approximately two miles away. They suffered minor injuries and have since been discharged from hospital.

A 49-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. He was initially detained on suspicion of assault and attempted murder.

Emergency services were called to both scenes at around 2:30pm on Saturday. Police have stated that the incidents are not being treated as terrorism-related and are not connected to a separate Counter Terrorism Policing investigation in Rochdale, which involved the arrest of a 40-year-old Iranian man.

Assistant Chief Constable John Webster said: "The actions of a single person have caused significant harm to the people of Rochdale. The suspect, a white male, is currently in custody. No further details can be released at this stage."

The investigation is ongoing.
