Experts Call For School Rugby Tackling Ban

More than 70 doctors and health experts have called for a ban on tackling in school rugby games.

In an open letter, the experts warn that there is a high risk of serious injury among under-18s playing rugby, and they urge schools to move to touch rugby and non-contact versions of the game.

The letter, which is addressed to ministers, chief medical officers, and children's commissioners, describes rugby as a "high-impact collision sport." It states:

"The majority of all injuries occur during contact or collision, such as the tackle and the scrum. These injuries, which include fractures, ligamentous tears, dislocated shoulders, spinal injuries and head injuries, can have short-term, life-long and life-ending consequences."

The Rugby Football Union said it took player safety "extremely seriously" and that recent changes meant young players underwent a "gradual and managed" introduction to the contact version of the game.

A spokesman said:

"We believe that high quality coaching, officiating, medical support and appropriate player behaviour in line with the core values all contribute to reducing the risk of injury occurring."

If you have suffered a sports injury because of somebody else's negligence, you may be entitled to compensation. Speak to our team on 0845 603 0708 to find out more.
