M&S Employee Awarded 35,000 Compensation

An employee from Marks & Spencer has been awarded £35,000 in compensation after damaging her back when a heavy box fell on top of her.

Caroline Sutherland, 52, was unloading a cage holding three boxes labelled as pillows whilst working in the Homewear department at an M&S store. However, one of the boxes contained four heavy marble parasol bases weighing in at over 30kg.

Caroline, a mother of two from Somerset, said:

"£35,000 might sound like a lot but that is £1,000 a year for the rest of my life if I live to be in my 80s.

"It's barely enough to cover a chiropractor, let alone to live on. My entire life has been ruined by Marks and Spencer's incompetence.

"I am utterly disgusted at how I have been treated and it saddens me because my choices and ability to work have been restricted."

Caroline was informed that she had suffered from acute back derangement or strain as a result of the unexpected heavy lift and would require weeks of treatment and physiotherapy. She returned to work after eight months but left shortly after due to severe pain. Caroline is now heavily restricted with the type of work she can do and blames M&S for her situation.
