Market Street Metrolink

Metrolink Tracks and Markings Could Change After Incident

Manchester Metrolink may change tracks and markings after an independent report into the injury of a pensioner at Market Street.

Metrolink bosses could consider a re-design of the track layout and markings in Manchester City Centre after an elderly man was knocked down by a tram at Market Street, suffering a broken hip and pelvis. A report by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is due to be published next year, with a number of recommendations expected to be announced for changes to the busy pedestrian area surrounding the tracks on Market Street.

Peter Cushing, Transport for Greater Manchester's Metrolink Director, said:

"The safety and welfare of our passengers, staff and the general public in the communities we serve is of paramount importance.

"All drivers undergo rigorous and constant training and appropriate speed restrictions are in place, with very low speeds observed through Market Street, Piccadilly Gardens and its busy bus interchange.

"We are resolute in our commitment to safety and take every opportunity to review the measures in place to ensure they are effective, however until we receive the findings of the Rail Accident Investigation Board (RAIB) inquiry it would not be appropriate to comment further."

Colin Crawshaw, the tram driver responsible for the incident, was fined by Magistrates after pleading guilty to driving without due care and attention.
