Refuse Collector Seriously Injured by Falling Bin

A Stockport refuse worker is fighting for his life after being crushed by a wheelie bin.

The accident happened when the bin was being loaded onto the lorry. The 51-year-old father of one suffered a broken sternum and several broken ribs. He has also developed septicaemia. The man, who has been a refuse worker for 15 years, is said to have been hit on the chest by the dropped bin.

He sought medical attention sometime after the incident, after developing pains in his body. He was later transferred to Wythenshawe Hospital where his family are at his bedside.

Workmates of the victim claim the incident follows a series of near-misses caused by alleged faults in the loading gear on some of the council's vehicles.

The firm used by Stockport council to operate waste collection refused to comment on whether it was aware of any previous incidents. It did confirm it was investigating the cause of the accident.
