Victim Forgives Drink Driver Despite Life Changing Injuries

A grandad who was left in a coma after being knocked over by a mum drunk on prosecco is still struggling to recover from the horror crash.

Chef Ahmed Rezgui, 56, was returning home from work when the crash happened. He suffered a heart attack, was left in a coma for two months, and faced another four months of hospital treatment.

Trainee teacher Sophie Burton, 25, crashed her Ford Focus into the victim on the A6 in Stockport. She was behind the wheel despite being three times over the drink drive limit, having consumed a bottle of prosecco.

Mr Rezgui said he forgave Burton for her actions, saying:

"My life will never be the same again. You change after an accident, I have become more anxious. My brain doesn't work like it used to.

"I have forgiven though. She has prison, that part is finished now I can focus on my own life.

"I miss being able to walk normally without a stick. But going to work is what I miss most, maybe I can go back next year.

"I don't drink, but if people do they should leave the car and get a taxi. For some people drinking and driving is nothing, they don't care, but what happens to me shows it is not nothing."
