Amazon UK Warns of Defective Hoverboard Models

Amazon UK has urged its customers to throw away defective hoverboards after some models of the device were found with non-compliant plugs.

The British division of online retailer Amazon has warned its customers of defective models of the two-wheeled scooter that has been taking the Christmas season by storm. It urged customers to bring their hoverboards to a recycling centre to be disposed of as soon as possible if their model was supplied with a non-compliant UK plug.

Chief ombudsman Dean Dunham said:

"Consumers who have already purchased a hoverboard, perhaps as a Christmas present, should contact the retailer and for their written assurance that it's safe and in particular that it has a compliant plug with a fuse."

Hoverboards have been linked to a number of fires recently due to non-compliant models suffering from overheating, failed cut-off switches and unsafe chargers and batteries. National Trading Standards has seized 15,000 hoverboards and the London Fire Brigade has issued a warning not to leave the devices unattended while charging.
