Birmingham man injured by police officer

Birmingham man Mohaib Qurban suffered injuries to his eye socket when he was arrested for throwing a paper cup from a car in 2012.

A Police Officer from the West Midlands is now facing an internal misconduct hearing following CCTV footage released showing the officer punching down on Qurban.

The trainee fork-lift truck driver told reporters that he needed counselling for post-traumatic stress disorder after the incident in which he suffered a shattered eye socket, a damaged jaw and cuts.

Mr Qurban who says he lost his job after taking time off work to recover is now suing the West Midlands force for compensation.

Police arrested Qurban in Birmingham city centre where he had been drinking Vodka in the passenger seat of a friend's car.  He threw a paper cup out of the car window and when it launched back into the vehicle, a police officer appeared.

Claiming that there had been reports of drunken and disorderly behaviour, the officer is alleged to have pushed Mr Qurban against the bonnet of the car and sprayed CS gas in his face.

The victim tells how he was punched in the face and then struck with the same officer's knee resulting in a shattered eye socket.

Qurban's complaint to the West Midlands Police was rejected but following an appeal to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, the officer will appear at a disciplinary hearing.
