Midwife suspended for 3 months after leaving a mother and unborn baby to die

A senior midwife at Queen's Hospital in Romford, Essex went home after she had finished her shift although a heavily pregnant woman, due to give birth, was in distress and later died.

Midwife Rebecca Matovu left Sareena Ali, 27 in agonising pain, although her family desperately pleaded there was something wrong and she needed medical assistance.

Mrs Ali soon became cold and unresponsive but Ms Matovu went home instead of helping to resuscitate her. Ms Ali had an emergency Caesarean section straight away but the baby died shortly after being born.

The mother stayed in intensive care for five days on a life support machine but died from a ruptured womb and massive organ failure.

In 2011 an inquest by coroner Chinyere Inyama found staff at the hospitals maternity unit, had contributed her death through neglect.

Clive Powell, chairing the NMC panel, said: 'By ignoring the pleas for help that were made by the patient's husband, Ms Matovu failed to listen to the people in her care and this is especially serious given that she was acting as midwife in charge.
