Mother Issues Baby Car Seat Warning

A mother has issued a stark warning after her new-born baby was left struggling to breathe when a two-hour car journey caused oxygen deprivation.

Kirsti Clark and her husband Christopher Clark lay three-week-old Harper on a play mat after a long journey home due to traffic. The baby's lips turned blue, her jaw clenched, and white foam started frothing from her nose and mouth.

The couple rushed their daughter to hospital, where medics resuscitated the baby after she had suffered a seizure. A consultant warned that spending more than an hour in a car seat can cause a baby's oxygen levels to plummet.

Now Ms Clark is eager to raise awareness that a short time in a completely safe car seat can have such dire consequences. She said, "When the consultant told us it was the car seat I couldn't believe it. I thought 'there's no way.' I couldn't understand why nobody had ever told us."

The Lullaby Trust is a charity which funds research into infant deaths. Speaking in 2016 its chief executive, Francine Bates, said:

"We believe that parents should be given informed and evidence based advice when they purchase car seats.

"We are delighted that infant car seat manufacturers working with ourselves and the Baby Product Association have committed to producing stronger guidelines with us."
