Pride 2019

In a show of unity solicitors, barristers and legal executives are marking "Pride 2019" by carrying out events in Manchester, Cardiff, Leeds and Birmingham. There will also be, what has been described as, a "flagship" march will take place in London.

 

Under the banner "All are equal under the law" members of the Law Society of England and Wales, the Bar Council  and the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) will all be marching together. 

 

A key part of the marches will be to emphasise the work lawyers do to defend and protect the rights of LGBT rights as well as highlighting their wider contribution to the legal profession.

 

President of the Law Society, Christina Blacklaws, said, "'We're proud to advocate for LGBT+ rights in the legal profession and in wider society - and this year we'll be attending more Pride events than ever. Recent developments show why, in the 50th anniversary year of the Stonewall riots, we still must take a stand.

 

'In Brunei, brutal new punishments have been introduced for consensual same-sex acts. In the UK, we have witnessed a fierce backlash to educating on diversity in our schools. A hostile narrative towards trans people and their rights persists.

 

'It is important to show the public the legal profession will constantly and unequivocally support LGBT+ people and their rights.'

 

The Solicitors Regulation Authority are co-ordinating events in Cardiff and Birmingham and all lawyers, regardless of gender orientation, are welcome to attend. Those on the march will also include representatives from the Legal Services Board, the Bar Standards Board, CILEx and the Intellectual Property Regulation Board.
