Refund for Thousands of Drivers in Mis-selling Scandal

Hundreds of thousands of British motorists could be entitled to huge sums of compensation following warnings of a wide-spread mis-selling scandal.

Lawyers say that thousands of used vehicles may have been sold under false pretences, meaning their owners could now be entitled to compensation equal to the full price of their vehicle.

If motorists were sold a car which was advertised as having had 'one careful driver' but was in fact a rental or company car used by numerous drivers, owners may have a case under consumer protection legislation.

Estimates suggest there are as many as one million former rental or fleets cars sold across the UK every year.

Mike Hawes, CEO of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), said:

"SMMT doesn't comment on individual ASA cases. Ex fleet vehicles can be a great used car choice, if as with any other vehicle it can be demonstrated they have been maintained and serviced properly and offer good value for money.

"We advise every consumer to carry out all the relevant background checks before committing to buying a used-car. Simple steps such as checking the log book, using the DVLA's vehicle information checker and verifying MOT history can all offer peace of mind to car buyers."
