Super rich 'Kitchen King' to leave his fortune to charity

Self-made Bolton Millionaire businessman John Roberts known as 'Kitchen King' has revealed this week he will leave his entire fortune to charity rather than his children.

As an entrepreneur and co-founder of successful AO.com white goods retailer, Mr Roberts started the company, originally named Appliances Online 14 years ago for a bet.

When a friend bet him just £1 that he would not get the business started whilst they drank in a Bolton pub on Christmas Eve over a decade ago, little did John Roberts know he would make £500 million from the company.

As the down to earth Lancashire man spoke to a Sunday Times reporter, he confessed that he wants to follow his own father's example and let his children make their own way in the world.

40 year old Mr Roberts plans to leave his mammoth fortune entirely to charity saying "My dad's philosophy was, I'll give you the best start in life I can afford and what you do with it is up to you".

Both Mr and Mrs Roberts want their five children to grow up 'happy and normal' in their chosen careers.  Adding "My wife and I have been really conscious not to change anything. The kids are getting nothing".

Adamant that his off-spring will not inherit his fortune, the former Moben kitchens employee follows in the footsteps of celebrities like Sean Connery and TV Chef Nigella Lawson who cut their children from their wills.  Mr Roberts plans to start a charitable foundation instead.
