Welder Wins 500K in Negligence Claim

A former welder has won over £500,000 in compensation following an accident at work which cost him his career and caused life changing injuries.

The 49 year old victim was a welder for the Hulme Group where he repaired commercial vehicles for a living before the accident which left him with a serious facial fracture.

The employers were found to be negligent and guilty of not providing a safe workplace for their employee who since the accident has undergone five operations to rebuild his eye socket.

A member of Unite, the Manchester man was attempting to join two pieces of steel together when the hydraulic jack he was using gave way and struck him in the face.  So serious were his injuries, he is no longer able to leave the house without wearing a prosthetic mask to protect his face.

Describing himself as a healthy active man before the accident happened which severed the nerves in his left cheek and shattered his eye socket.  Speaking to Union-News, the victim said "I will be in pain for the rest of my life, I don't do anything like I used to.  My family life has been ruined".

Regional Secretary of Unite Mick Whitley added "This case shows how important it is for employers to provide safe work equipment and a safe system of work. The Hulme Group failed to provide our member with a safe workplace which has caused unimaginable consequences for him".
