Wrong Shade of Pink Leads to Planning Dispute

A pensioner has become involved in a bitter planning row after one of her neighbours complained she had painted her house a slightly darker shade of pink.

Su Rose moved into her townhouse in Belsize Park, Camden, in 1975, and painted the exterior of the property pink in 1991. Last year she changed to a 'sombre, earthy and mature' pink, just two shades darker, and in so doing unintentionally broke planning rules.

Because the 70-year-old lives in a conservation area, she has been forced to apply for retrospective planning permission after the council received a letter of complaint from one of her neighbours.

If the planning permission is denied then she faces the costly prospect of having to repaint the property in the previous shade of pink.

Councillor Phil Jones, cabinet member for regeneration, said:

"Planning permission is not normally required to paint your property. However, in this case the property is located in the Belsize Park conservation area, where this development right has been removed.

"This matter was brought to the Council's attention and an enforcement investigation was opened.

"A retrospective planning application has since been submitted to retain the pink colour which is currently being considered. We received seven letters of support for the works and one objection during consultation."
