Safety Concerns For Wigan's Life Centre Building

An eye-witness has told how only the quick-thinking actions of staff prevented a tragedy when a pane of glass fell 20ft from the top of Wigan's Life Centre building.

The pane shattered and plunged to the ground close to a seating area where members of the public had been standing just moments before.

Questions are now being raised as to whether the building should remain open while health and safety checks take place. Currently, the entrance area has been cordoned off, and visitors are being asked to use an alternative entrance.

Adding to the safety concerns is the fact that this is not an isolated incident. In 2014 a glass panel fell from its frame, also during the summer months. This has led to speculation that the recent hot weather may have forced the glass out of its frame.

One eye-witness, who asked not to be named, said:

"I must commend the staff who acted quickly and professionally, if it wasn't for them there could have been a death, they have probably saved a life.

"The panel fell mostly intact, I had a very clear view. It's falling about 20ft, if someone had been underneath it would have killed them."

The council has reassured residents that the building is now undergoing robust safety checks.
