Accidents at work - news from Birmingham Accident Solicitors.

According to the statistics from the Health and Safety Executive, we found the following statistics relating to injuries in the work place..

  • Between 2011 & '12, 1.1 million people were suffering from a work related illness.
  • 173 workers were killed at work.
  • Over 100 thousand other injuries to employers were reported under RIDDOR.
  • 212 thousand people took more than 3 days off work due to their injuries.
  • 27 million working days were lost due to work related injuries and illnesses.
  • These injuries cost society an estimated £13.4 billion in healthcare and compensation (year 2010 -2011)

New workers are more likely to be involved in an accident in the first 6 months of their job than those who have worked at the same firm for a longer period.

Employees who are new to a site, will not always remember security measures, may not recognise potential hazards, may not understand rules regarding safety equipment and may ignore warning signs or forget to wear protective gear.

Advice for new employees:

  1. It's essential that new workers go through health and safety checks with their employer, especially if they are handling machinery or tools.

  2. An employer should check beforehand whether your previous work experience is relevant to the role, your physical capability to do the job and how familiar you are working in a fast paced environment.

  3. Ensure you receive an induction and take time to explore your workplace noticing any potential hazards.

  4. Your employer should make sure health and safety notices and control measures are up to date.

  5. If you work in a noisy workplace, are you wearing safe ear protection?

  6. Employers should make sure their new workers are supervised or shadowed for the first few weeks especially if they are inexperienced.

Did you know.. 8 out of 16 of recent fatal accidents happened during the first ten days of a new employees job, half of them on the very first day ? Therefore, it's important to know you've received the correct training and you're aware of all safety measures in a new workplace.
