Road Safety Improvements at Accident Hotspot

New road safety measures are being installed at an accident hotspot outside a school in Walsall.

The improvements will be made near St Thomas More Catholic School, at Wolverhampton Street and Darlaston Lane.

Just last month an 11-year-old girl was hit by a car on her way to the school. She was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital as a precaution.

The incident prioritised the work for Walsall Council's Highway Safety Team, and Darlaston South Councillor Doug James said:

"We couldn't wait any longer. We needed to act on road safety because of recent road traffic incidents that placed pupils at risk.

"Work on the improvements will be welcomed by both pupils and safe drivers on their daily school runs.

"A larger scheme is being considered but requires substantial funding. We will continue to work with the school and educate drivers through our selection of traffic controls to keep people safe."

New signs and road markings are to be installed, and a road safety initiative will engage with pupils at St Thomas More to reinforce safe road crossing behaviour.
