Driver racked up 98 points after being caught speeding almost every day for a month

A van driver caught speeding almost every day for a month racked up 98 points on his licence, a court heard.

43-year-old Vasile Strajeru of Holbeach, admitted committing the offences between Nov 27 and Dec 27 last year. The majority of the 29 offences were recorded by a speed camera as he drove a Vauxhall Combi van along a rural single-carriage road.

Strajeru was issued more than eight times the 12 penalty points required for a driving ban to be considered. After a hearing at Boston magistrates' court, he was banned from the roads for a year and fined £10,650. Strajeru, a director of construction firm Start Building, was also fined £800 for a separate charge of driving with no insurance on March 24 this year. From Dec 21 he must pay £700 per month.

A spokesman for Lincolnshire Police said: "The individual was issued with 30 notices in relation to the offences which occurred in 2020, and he did not respond to those notices of intended prosecution or our attempts to make contact. As a result, we sent the matter to court. Speed cameras are not used to punish serial offenders, they are there to deter speeding and reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in a road traffic collision. "If a driver decides to commit multiple offences they will be dealt with accordingly."

In 2018, 27-year-old Ashley Peart obtained 144 points for speeding and was handed a three-year driving ban. Four cars registered in his name were caught on camera breaking the speed limit 24 times.

According to the DVLA, there are 8,632 people in Britain with at least 12 points. Most drivers are disqualified for at least six months if they get 12 or more points within three years, however, Courts can allow offenders to keep their licences if they can prove a ban would cause extreme financial hardship.
