Drivers Face Car Smoking Ban

Smokers could be hit with yet another blow as a ban on lighting up a cigarette in a vehicle carrying children could be in place before the next election.

As MP's overwhelmingly voted in favour of the ban following a House of Commons vote, according to a report in The Guardian, the motion will be passed in England.  Wales are to make their decision independently.

The smoking ban will prevent adults from exposing children to cigarette smoke while being carried in a vehicle but it is as yet unclear how this will be implemented.  Despite reservations from some cabinet members, including Nick Clegg as to how the ban will be policed, it is thought there will be a fine for people who break the law.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister who missed the vote on Monday confirmed "Whilst he understands the comments that some have expressed, his view is that the time for this approach has come".

The plan which was first put forward by Labour divided Conservative back benchers as several canvassed views from their constituents on social media sites.

As a fervent campaigner on this issue, Luciana Berger, shadow public health minister felt the decision was a great victory for child health and added "It is a matter of child protection, not adult choice.  The will of parliament has been clearly expressed today and this must be respected."

Smoking in workplaces and public places has been banned in England since 2007 but as the law already extends to carrying children in cars in Australia, Canada and some US states, we look set to follow suit.
