Hackers Steal Cash from 20000 Tesco Bank Customers

Tesco Bank has revealed that 20,000 of its customers have each had up to £2,000 stolen from their bank accounts in a massive cyber-attack that may not yet be over.

Chief executive Benny Higgins said they have frozen all online transactions for 24 hours until the situation is back "under full control."

Mr Higgins said 40,000 accounts had been targeted, with around half of these being plundered for cash. However, he would not say how much in total had been taken.

The attack unfolded on Saturday night when the bank began warning customers about suspected 'fraudulent activity.' After the alert many customers discovered that up to £2,000 had left their accounts as unauthorised payments to mysterious companies.

The National Crime Agency is investigating the thefts.

Mr Higgins said:

"Tesco Bank can confirm that, over the weekend, some of its customer current accounts have been subject to online criminal activity, in some cases resulting in money being withdrawn fraudulently.

"We apologise for the worry and inconvenience that this has caused for customers, and can only stress that we are taking every step to protect our customers' accounts."
