Singer Tony Christie Ambushed by Armed Gangs in France

Singer Tony Christie, who is originally from Doncaster, has spoken of his horror after the tour bus he was travelling in was attacked by armed migrants in France.

The 73-year-old and his wife Sue, 68, were asleep on the Jumbo Cruiser vehicle heading home through France when a gang of five hooded men surrounded their driver as he filled up at a petrol station in Dunkirk in the early hours of Saturday.

As the driver, Gareth Owen, was distracted by the gang, another individual broke into the trailer carrying stage equipment.

When the gang dispersed, Christie's tour manager Paul Smith opened the trailer and discovered the stowaway who threatened to kill Smith with a crowbar before fleeing into the night.

Last night Christie said:

"I couldn't believe it. They could have got into the coach, what the hell would they have done?

"It's the second time it's happened to the coach driver. The first time he was stabbed by a spike. These poor drivers take a hell of a risk.

"I feel really sorry for these people, I know they're desperate but we shouldn't be scared to travel. I think I will fly from now on, I don't think I'll go on the road again."
