Violent Scuffles at HS2 Meeting

Trouble flared up at a meeting about the revised HS2 route through South Yorkshire, resulting in a number of residents grappling on the floor.

The scuffle broke out as hundreds of residents queued at Barnburgh Primary School near Doncaster on Monday, August 1. The meeting had been held for residents to find out about the revised route for the proposed high-speed railway.

During the scuffles, one man was pushed to the floor and another individual was pinned against a wall. South Yorkshire Police were called to the scene but no arrests were made.

Reports suggest that tempers began to fray when residents could not all fit in the meeting, and a second meeting had to be held later that evening in order to accommodate everybody.

The meeting was not organised by HS2, but representatives attended.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said officers were called to the Church Lane meeting at around 19:00. He added;

"It was reported that a significant number of people were trying to enter the premises to attend the meeting, which caused some disruption.

"Upon officer arrival, there was a significant number of people at the location but no criminal offences were reported and no arrests were made."
